Planning consent granted at Eden Walk

British Land and USS have secured planning approval for the proposed £400 million regeneration of Eden Walk, Kingston, which will provide 28 retail units, 12 restaurants and cafes, 380 new homes and around 35,000 sq ft of high quality, modern and flexible office space. It will also include public spaces for events and a boutique cinema. The development will create an estimated 600 additional jobs for local people.

Why should businesses be thinking ‘smart’ about their office?

That’s the question our new report, Smart Offices: A 2017 Vision for the Future, sets out to answer. Written in collaboration with WORKTECH Academy, the report explores the six key benefits a smart office can deliver. Our survey of London-based office workers and decision makers shows that only 35% of employees think smart office tech is being prioritised by their employer. New lettings at Meadowhall

Meadowhall has announced six new signings and upsizes totalling almost 90,000 sq ft as the centre’s £60 million refurbishment moves into its next phase. Primark, BHS, Wilko and Schuh are increasing their footprint, Timberland is launching a new look store and Second Cup is opening a UK flagship coffee shop. The refurbishment completes at the end of the year and is the most significant investment in the centre since it opened.

F&B brands sign up at Leadenhall

Premium fast food restaurant Bel-Air and speciality London coffee company Black Sheep Coffee are to open at The Leadenhall Building, completing the leasing of the building's retail space.

Looking to the future at Broadgate

Sir Robert McAlpine and British Land this week buried a Time Capsule at 100 Liverpool Street to mark the redevelopment at the Broadgate Campus. Sir Robert McAlpine held workshops for Hoxton Garden Primary School during which the children wrote letters to their future selves; these were stored in the Time Capsule which will be opened again in 10 years’ time.

Contracts exchanged for the sale of The Leadenhall Building

At the start of March, British Land and Oxford Properties announced the exchange of contracts for the sale of The Leadenhall Building to CC Land for a headline price of £1.15 billion. Completion is conditional on approval by the shareholders of CC Land.

We recently announced the provision of enhanced Shared Parental Pay to our employees, providing equal benefits in terms of pay following the birth or adoption of a child. This is a progressive step towards improving gender equality in the workplace, providing flexibility and choice to employees in how they care for a child in its first year, and demonstrates our commitment to inclusivity, helping to attract and retain talented individuals of all sexes. We’re coming to the end of our month long social media focus on activities which help people gain the skills and opportunities to perform at their best. From celebrating our Young Readers partnership with The Literacy Trust, our enhanced Shared Parental Pay policy and the work of our Women’s Committee in supporting women in business, to encouraging new entrants into our sector through Pathways to Property and Budding Brunels, as well as looking at how the office environment can boost performance. And that was just in March!

National Apprenticeship Week

We published a series of blogs by apprentices at our places, including Hollie at Clarges Mayfair, the first in her family to go to university, Omar at Meadowhall, a refugee from the war in Sudan, and Aaron at St Stephen’s, on customer service and security.
